I must put in my 2 cents on this situation. I think it is utterly rediculous at what these people are saying. If you want the truth, every single person who had Harley (with exception of his last and final home) has a part in his total destruction. There is no one person to point the finger at. There is the first home that had him that allowed him to be aggressive because they wanted it and praised him for it (they wanted protection...he did his job), then the next home that had him did what they could and posted him on craigslist for 50.00 including AKC papers and leaving him intact. If you say you tried everything, didn't you think that neutering was an option????? That is where I start frist on any dog that comes into my home like this.....so, you sent him out like he was a loaded gun. You basically started the ball rolling with this. Yes, you cared for him and loved him, but you DID send him out WITH AKC papers and intact. When posting those kinds of ads online you are going to get nothing BUT breeders. Then on to Kelches, they were told BY A VET (which I would find a new vet) that breeding him may help him, so that's what they did. We all know that a male dog that is around females in heat will drop weight, and some will drop a TON of weight. Every male goes throguh this. When a dog is being stressed like this, it allows the unactive parasites to become active again and start attacking the system, so Kelches would NOT have known he had this worm problem. He was then passed to another person who bred him for and had him for only a few short days, then passed him on to another house with females. Everytime a dog is put in a new home/new situation they become stressed, well with the anxiety Harley already had and being passed off so many times it is no wonder that the hook worms took over his system like crazy, and he was so thin. I am NOT defending ANYONE, I think everyone in the situation was very WRONG. But there is no finger to point at just one person, hold up a mirror and point your finger, you had a part in it too!!!!
As for mentoring Kelches Kastle I do not see why you think this is such a horrible idea. A breeder is going to breed anyway, so why not be a bigger person and step in and say hey, let me help you. She has asked for help, and Powells and myself are willing to help her. Without our help who knows what king of quality danes would come out of the situation. She has agreed to home inspections at anytime, a nutrition/supplemt schedule for her dogs, proper vet care and propper testing of her dogs. She is young and needs help. I was there once, just like many many many breeders that are now producing some of the biggest names in the great dane world currently. Everyone has to start somewhere. She got off on the wrong foot and she has realized her mistakes. 9yrs ago I was in the same boat, I thought that just because they called it a great dane and it had the proper tools for mating that they could be mated. I did not understand that there were standards for looks, and color of this breed. I had a wonderful breeder step in and mentor me. She did NOT belittle me for what I had already done, but explained to me why it was wrong and how to correct it. There is NOTHING wrong with helping someone better there program to be the best it can be and get on the correct path. Sherie Kelches door is open for anyone to come and see her home and her dogs that live IN HER HOUSE NOT IN KENNELS. So before you jump on someone and say they should not be helped first think about how you were when you first entered the great dane world. Wouldn't have been nice for you to have a mentor? I know I was extremely thankful for it! Our goal is to produce great danes that uphold the AKC standard through comformation, temperment, health and color. To produce the best puppies for family pets first and foremost, but have that family pet be a great example of the great dane. What is so wrong with that? NOTHING! Everyone has to start somewhere. If Sherie does not uphold to the agreement that has been set with her, then she will no longer be mentored by Powells or Royal Danes (myself). Please feel free to e-mail with any questions or issues that you may have about the great dane or your own personal breeding program and we can help you too! Please keep the hate mail to yourself. We are doing what is best for the breed, because people all over breed just to breed and never try to improve the great dane which is what EVERYONE'S goal should be. Read the standard and requirements and look at your breeding stock....do they have what it takes? I love this breed and have fully dedicated myself to improve it. So I reach my hand out to those that need it. Please do not chastise me for helping someone improve the great dane breed.
