I am located in Southern VA.. In Axton VA (between Martinsville and Danville).
I am looking for a teenager and up, who wants to do some helping in the barn/excersizing horses.
We rarely have more than 3 stalls to muck, hay and water. We have 29 horses here on the property, with 8 being boarders. We always have new mares coming in and out for breeding. We have 9 training horses, and this changes all the time as well. We currently have 6 foals, which need everyday work. We have 11 mares that are here and either have been or are still yet to be bred this year. We have 5 full time show horses. We have 3 stallions.
So as you can see, we have a lot going on all the time. Fun, Fun, Fun all the time. You will learn a ton!
Either you can work off board, you can work off lessons. You could probably work off a horse lease or showing. We only have to put in 1.5 to 2 hrs feeding/mucking/watering each morning and night. There tends to be tons of time for riding/training/breeding in the middle of the day. The working part is a total of 4 hours a day.
After being evaluated you may be able to make money for training a couple horses.
You can learn: Care for horses, stable management skills, time management, to have a good eye for soundness, how to train a horse, how to halter break a foal, how to start a horse (we work from the ground up, and do not start horses until they have adaquate training on the ground), breeding, showing, horse selection. There is more- just not enough room to write it all!
There is one other side to the job... we frequently have to work with orphan calves- so you get the whole livestock side of things as well. Right now we are bottle feeding 3 orphans, and unfortunetly an orphan twin died yesterday. So there is a whole other side of things. We raise cows as well as horses, lol SOMETHING HAS TO PAY FOR THE HORSES! LOL.. J/K. But it is great having a calf think you are mother, and it is great experience if one day we need to care for an orphan foal.
There are other possibilities as far as "payment". This is a full time job, but if there are more than one teenager and there needs to be shifts that is completely fine. Time off in the day varies, but it is very manageable to have 2 hrs off for lunch. The training and such is not necc. but is available. If you only want to help with feeding/mucking/watering morning and night that is fine. The mid day stuff is just an excellent learning experience.
You can learn as much or as little as you desire, but the amount you can learn is endless.
Experience with basic horse activities is a Plus, but we are willing to train you in every aspect. We want someone who is dedicated, and really wants to work with horses. We also need someone who is not easily scared by horses! This is important as it could be dangerous. None of our horses are evil twits- they are all calm good natured animals, that love people. It is very easy to learn the ropes, and you will jump right in on your first day. Barn work is NOT HARD.
This is available for a teenager or up.. any older age is fine- as long as he/she is 13 or older!
