York - True Story of a Slave's journey with Lewis and Clark

York was born into slavery; at the very bottom of Southern society.

When Meriwether Lewis invited Clark to co-captain a military unit on a mission to cross North America, York was taken along. This adventure gave York a taste of freedom and respect neither he nor his master ever anticipated.

After the expedition , the adjustment to normal life in the states was difficult for many of the men. Some returned to the frontier. Lewis committed suicide within three years. Yet none of the men faced York's dilemma.

While the white heroes of the expedition were rewarded with fame, cash, and land; only York and Sacajawea received nothing. York was plunged back into the humiliating and degrading life of a common slave.
