the max233 performs the same function as the max 232
on conventional max/mels, but without the need for all the extra
capacitors(4)
easiest way to explain this, other than design simplicity, is
that if a problem occurs with a board, simply take out one chip and put in
another
no requirement to solder & desolder capacitors, no massive testing,
just a simple 20 second change
