Harlequin Macaw Experienced Large Bird Home Only
Asking $4,000
I am looking for the right home for my Harlequin Macaw, Jazz. This is a difficult decision, so finding a home that understands macaws is very important to me.
Jazz hatched February 4, 2021. He has been raised in our family around children and dogs.
He is fully flighted, although he doesnt choose to fly on his own. Think Blu from Rio he has wings and technically knows what theyre for, but isnt particularly interested in using them. I think he could become a much more confident flyer with someone willing to work with him.
Jazz is friendly and social by macaw standards, but I dont want to describe him as cuddly or give someone unrealistic expectations. Hes a macaw. He has his own opinions, boundaries, and preferences about when and how he wants to interact. My children can and do handle him occasionally, but generally on his terms, which is usually after a bath when he is happiest.
I would not consider Jazz a biter or an aggressive bird. That said, he is still a macaw with a very large beak. He uses his beak to communicate, explore, and occasionally let you know he doesnt appreciate somethingand even normal macaw beaking can hurt. Anyone interested in him should be comfortable reading large-parrot body language and respecting those boundaries.
He takes baths and lets me trim his nails. He travels with us, and weve even taken him camping at least once or twice a year.
I want his next home to be prepared for the commitment that comes with a macaw. I did my best, but he was my first large bird, and despite all the research, it is just too much for me. Ive learned that you dont really know until youve actually experienced it, so I strongly prefer someone with previous macaw or large-parrot experience.
I am happy to answer questions and talk honestly about Jazzs personality, routines, quirks, and what living with him is actually like.
